February 2, 2007

I am in Moore Haven, Fl tonight as I was last night. Today the wind blew like crazy and it would alternately look like it was going to storm but then it would simply pass on by with a couple of Sprinkles. We after a ten block walk to and from a Dollar Store for a water hose to fill the water tank. Now I know I can travel without running out of water for a while. Then I hooked up the hose to give Shorty his bath and get all those salt crystals off of everything. I had him looking like new inside and out and here comes the city park service and mowed the yard by the docks and its looking like I missed half of the job I was supposed to do. And just after I had gone and showered as well here comes all the dust and dirt.

At noon they had a big citywide barbeque to raise money for a lady who had lived in Moore Haven all her life and who died real poor. I went to the barbeque and had some smoked feral hog and then some wild boar to see which I liked best. Also had some swamp cabbage which comes from a type of palm that grows in the swamps here. Boy was it good and when they found out I was on a boat they sent another plate home with me. I am living to good.

Before the barbeque got started a couple from Drummond Island, MI came over to look at the boat after they had been to the library. I then had lunch with them and found that they operate a gift shop there the rest of the year except for the months of December, January and February when they bring there motorhome to Moore Haven where they have a permanent pad for it. I found out a lot people are going to the interior of Florida because it is cheaper to live. They said for me to look them up when passing Drummond Island and he said he might go for a leg on the lakes. If I need any help up there just call they know someone who can help. Good to know, and they are having a friend of theirs who did the Loop two years ago and lives down here to come by tomorrow. That will be nice and hopefully he can give me some good advice for the Great Lakes portion. They have a friend who is a member of Boat Nerds.com the great lakes people who follow the freighters and photograph all ships in the great lakes.

Tonight I have a sailboat behind me and behind him is about a 50 foot motor driven Proa which is two thirds of a triamaran. The proa is being pushed by two Honda 90 HP outboards. I think it has a family on it and it looks like they are traveling the world the way they are loaded with every toy known to man, its a beautiful boat very big and roomy. In front of me is a Heritage East trawler from Nova Scotia originally. And further in front of them is another big yacht. Well it is time to listen to the weather channel and see whats going to happen around here tonight.

Hi Larry: I learned this bit about swamp cabbage...
-----------------------------------
Swamp cabbage is an old-time Florida cracker favorite vegetable obtained from the heart of the cabbage palm (S. palmetto), which is the official state tree of Florida. The plant is known by such other names as palmetto palm, sabal palm, and swamp cabbage tree.

The cabbage palm grows wild all over the state in such abundance that it is not cultivated for harvest as a vegetable. Cabbage palms grow as individual plants scattered across the horizon, or thickly clustered together in hammocks. They are greatly valued as ornamental trees both for home and industrial landscaping. Most nurseries sell them in various sizes and shapes, deliver them, and set them in place for around $100.00.

Although the swamp cabbage tree grows wild, it is protected from indiscriminate cutting by its designation as Florida's state tree. Yet, large numbers of swamp cabbage are cut and sold each year, mostly as a prelude to land-clearing operations.
