February 9, 2007
After straining my back or twisting it at some point this was kind of a painful day but I managed to get a few things done. I washed down Shorty and got all of the salt off of him. Then I cleaned house which after a day of moving it needs it because I have things kind of scattered around and have to gather up after myself. Yesterday I had been working with two sets of charts. Today I put up the west coast of Florida charts and began looking at distances on both the charts and road map of Florida to get some general ideas of how far do I have to go to Georgia State Line. I wanted to be there the first of March. Well the charts and the map look as though at most from Wobasso, Florida I would have about six days of fifty miles each day and that is not hard to achieve after I saw a day of 69 miles without really pushing it. So I made the decision to lay back here for the next five days at least because that would make it the 14th of February and then if I took six days to travel the distance I still will have to lay up elsewhere for at least 8 more days. Well by staying here for the next five maybe I can get the back in shape for more travel. I had to have hurt my back either by twisting leaving the dock in Indian Town or going through the lock at St. Lucie.
I forgot to tell you all that when coming into Stuart, Florida you go past the Kadey Krogen boatworks where they build those big world cruising trawlers and past others as well. I was drooling by the time I got past them but then took stock of Shorty and he can go many more place than they can. Those are mostly ocean going. Also yesterday when I crossed St. Lucie inlet out in the ocean they had two boats that were taking on water and sinking and the coast guard channel was pretty lively until they had picked both of them up and Sea Tow had the boats under tow back to the bay. I imagine the way the wind was blowing it was pretty rugged on the outside. They bay inside was pretty rough but not the most rugged I have been in so far.
A quick note to tell you that if a person painted sunsets, outside my window is a beautiful sunset is taking place in pastel colors. But here in just a few more minutes it seems to be pitch black. Even though it is short lived I am missing the photo because my camera battery died on me and I am charging it. From the looks of the types of clouds and the way we had sun dogs tonight on both sides it means there are a lot of ice crystals in the higher atmosphere so there is probably another front coming in soon. Today was a gorgeous shirt sleeves and shorts day again.
We have had a few boats come by today but not as many as yesterday. I have no dock partners tonight other than the two boats was are docked here by the month. I met the couple from Vero Beach who own Rhumb Line and they are having her repaired and then they are selling her. She is a semi-trawler or at least that is the way they use her. It is always sad to see someone selling a boat but my time will come.
I visited some more with the Joneses and tomorrow they are going to the grocery store and I am going to tag along and get a few things as I am going to be here a while. I have a couple bugs in my house and some no-see-ums so I am back under Avon skin so soft again. I think they are out tonight because there is no breeze on the water at all since the sun has set. There is just one orange cloud left and then it will be dark.
I saw some dolphins go by today, just the smaller river kind, I could not see them but I was sitting in my chair and I heard them suck in air real close and then there they were. There might have been at least four of them, it is hard to tell and they were fishing not jumping wakes. Lucy the pelican makes about a dozen or more low level flights back and forth past the boat on her fishing expeditions. How do I know its Lucy, well she stopped and gave me her business card and said if I new any fishmongers close by she would appreciate the info. Richard today said that for about 15 years he had a big blue heron that would sit on his doorstep in the morning and wait for him to get his throw net and catch some bait fish. He got to the point that he would take his bill and knock on the door if he did not hurry up. Fisherman would stop by and feed him there remaining baitfish on the way home if they saw him on the dock. He said he would also follow him into the citrus grove when it was there and grab all of the little green snakes he could get. Richard said that he became just like a pet dog after so many years. Across from me is an Osprey nest with young and I imagine there are others in the area because today one of them caught a good size fish and was on the way to the nest when it was attacked by a couple of other Osprey trying to get him to drop the fish. When it is quiet like right now, I just looked out the window and there was a fisherman gliding by in his canoe casting under the dock here for fish.
