Day two on the road and still making lists and thinking about a lot of little things. We arrived in Crystal River in the evening and of course went to Three Rivers Marine and their was Shorty, all 26 ft of him waiting to be launched as soon as the paperwork was all signed and insurance was gotten.

January - December 2006

The year 2006 was spent getting ready for the Great Loop Cruise in the year 2007. First we had to determine whether the trip would be feasible or not because I had a budget which if done correctly might make the trip possible. After deciding whether it would work or not the next item of business was starting to gather all of the details together which would allow myself and my wife to accomplish this. Some of the details are charts to start planning the trip, determing what kind of boat was going to be our choice. Since we had been sailing the first choice was a sailboat because after 35 years of sailing it just seemed natural. Then came our ages which after looking at the amount of work to be done we decided maybe we should consider a powerboat of some sort. Since we were not going to be racing through the trip we began to look at trawlers available. They were all too expensive so back we went to sail and I found the ideal one, it was the Maine Cat which was thirty feet long and of which there were some available which fit our monetary constraints, but once again the age factor came in and with two prior back operations we were back looking at power. After much soul searching and a trip to Florida we settled on purchasing a Cape Cruiser Marinaut which was 26 ft long and powered by a Honda 200 hp outboard which I preferred over the inboards we had looked at. I also wanted the boat to be simple as possible and again this one came up first of the many we looked at. So, now the boat is in Crystal River, Florida awaiting us at Three Rivers Marine. We are scheduled for my wife to take some vacation and we will go down and outfit the boat for the upcoming trip. At some point this year my wife will be retiring and at that point is going to accompany me on the trip whenever friends and family are not crewing for for me. This kind of brings things to the current time and there is actually more than is in this message that we have gone through in the year prior. In case anyone is wondering where the boat got its name "Shorty". It is named for my wonderful father-in-law who was an outdoorsman from the word go and who I wish had lived long enough to participate in this adventure but who I know will be along for the ride in our hearts.
